Peter Stocker

Peter Stocker was an early user of Atlas. He initially had involvement with the Manchester Atlas then became a user of the Chilton Atlas making frequent visits. At the time data bases were in their infancy partly due to most computer systems being too small. Backing storage on the Chilton Atlas was significantly better than previous systems.

He was interested in relational database systems and became an expert in self-organising databases.

The ICL CAFS (Content Addressable File Store) system was of interest although ICL never turned it into a product.

After Atlas, he continued being involved in Chilton activities contributing to the Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems Review (RARM) in 1982 and the EASE Database Workshop in 1987.

Peter M. Stocker (1927-98)

Peter Stocker was a UK data base pioneer He died suddenly and unexpectedly on 25th November 1998. He was the founding Professor of Computing at the University of East Anglia and sometime Pro-Vice Chancellor.

Peter trained at Manchester University in the early days of mainframe computers. He took part in the early IFIP Working Conferences on Data Base Management, which were very influential at the dawn of the subject. Later (1982) he organised a very successful international summer school at the University of East Anglia on Data Bases: Role and Structure.

He is probably best known, first for his pioneering work on self-organising databases, and then on distributed databases and conceptual schema languages. He led an early UK distributed database consortium in the Proteus project. He was an active member of the VLDB Endowment and served on numerous programme committees. In particular, he was Programme Committee co-chair for VLDB'87, when it was first held in the UK.

He was also a genuine polymath and his able mind enabled him to make insightful comments in any technical discussion. More than this, Peter was a good friend to many; he had a wonderful impish sense of humour which enabled him to negotiate successfully the most tricky of situations. He was also an inspiring leader and seminar speaker, who had a strong influence on the development of database research in the UK.
