The 25th Anniversary of D-Day at Harwell, 5 June 1969

Every June, a service is held to commemorate D-Day. This takes place around the memorial stone in the south-east corner of site at the end of the runway used on the night of 5 June 1944. The memorial stone itself was unveiled on 14 May 1955 in the presence of Sir John Cockcroft (first Director of AERE Harwell), Air Chief Marshal Sir Leslie Hollinghurst and General Sir Richard ("Windy") Gale.
