Inauguration of the Laser Facility and Neodymium Glass Laser (20 June 1977)

The inauguration of the Neodymium Glass Laser at what became known as the Central Laser Facility took place on 20 June 1977. The Director of the new facility was Alan Gibson. In 1980 the laser was renamed VULCAN (Versicolor Ultima Lux Cohaerens pro Academica Nostra) or "The latest multi-coloured coherent light for our academics." It has undergone a number of upgrades since then but is still in operation.
