Part of the EASE programme concerned the installation of Central Servers in the community, to provide support for the single user workstations. At various times, requests had been issued for bids from HEIs to acquire one of these. The purchasing policy was based on an assessment carried out in 1986, when SUN and Pyramid servers were selected. The market place had changed considerably since then, so the Computing Facilities Committee Technical Advisory Group (CFTAG) asked for a new evaluation, which could be used as a basis for future purchases.
