Overview

Informatics had both support activities and research in the systems engineering areas:

• Software Engineering:
• Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems:
• Man Machine Interaction:
• Data Engineering:

Funding came initially from SERC via various activities such as the Interactive Computing Facility, Software Technology Initiative and Distibuted Computing Systems Programme. As the Alvey Programme took over, much more funding came from that area. Finally, as the Alvey Programme completed more and more of the activities were funded through grants from ther European ESPRIT II Programme. There was also a strong interest in graphics and visualization and many projects had a component of one or other in their activities.
