Politics: Overview

This section gives some thumbnail sketches of people involved in Atlas politics over the life of the Laboratory. Many were members of the Atlas Computer Committee in one of its three incarnations.

NIRNS Atlas Computer Committee
  • Professor Dick Buckingham
  • Sir John Cockcroft
  • Professor Tom Kilburn
  • Professor R E Peierls
  • Lord William Penney
  • Gerry Pickavance
  • Sir Graham Sutton
SRC Atlas Computer Committee
  • Professor Dick Buckingham
  • Professor Tom Kilburn
  • Professor R E Peierls
  • Gerry Pickavance
SRC Reconstituted Atlas Computer Committee
  • Tommy Thomas
SRC Chairmen
  • Brian Flowers
  • Sam Edwards

Clearly the Science Research Council who owned the Laboratory and to which the Committee reported had a major influence on the Laboratory both in terms of policy and financing. To some extent, the eventual closure of the Atlas Computer Laboratory was due to the financial constraints placed upon SRC under the Chairmanship of Professor Sam Edwards.

The major part of the Atlas Computer Laboratory was merged with the Rutherford High Energy laboratory in 1975. At the time the Director of the Rutherford Laboratory was Godfrey Stafford.
