There was not a great deal of work in Intelligent Knowledge Based Systems either in Informatics Department or RAL prior to the Alvey Programme. Gordon Ringland had an interest in Expert Systems in the financial area and that resulted in the award of the PARALFEX Project. There was also an interest in adaptive user interfaces from Michael Wilson which eventually resulted in the ESPRIT II MMI2 project.
The IKBS Group grew as support for the Alvey IKBS programme was required and that, in turn, increased the competence of the Group and got them involved quite a wide range of activities often in collaboration with other groups at RAL.
