2004-06-14: W3C is pleased to announce that on 15 June in Helsinki, Ms. Tarja Halonen, President of the Republic of Finland, presented the first Millennium Technology Prize to W3C Director Tim Berners-Lee. The award is given in one of four disciplines for "outstanding technological achievements that directly promote people's quality of life, are based on humane values, and encourage sustainable economic development." The ceremonies were held in conjunction with the Millennium Technology Conference in Espoo, Finland on 13-16 June.
On 11 June, the W3C Benelux Office and ISOC Belgium signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The objective is to create a better awareness of W3C and W3C Recommendations in these countries. ISOC Belgium will assist the W3C Benelux Office with organizing events in Belgium and Luxembourg and will also be carrying out public relations activities for W3C.
2004-06-17: The GEO (Guidelines, Education & Outreach) Task Force regularly produces resources to assist in the international application of W3C technologies. The most recent are tutorials on Using language information in XHTML, HTML and CSS and Character sets & encodings in XHTML, HTML and CSS and an article on Serving XHTML 1.0. 2004-05-27: W3C is planning to hold a workshop on Constraints and Capabilities for Web Services. The event is being organized by the W3C Architecture Domain and will be hosted at the Oracle Conference Center at Oracle Headquarters in Redwood Shores in California on October 12-13, 2004. A Call for Participation will be issued shortly.
2004-06-03: The RDF Data Access Working Group has released the First Public Working Draft of RDF Data Access Use Cases and Requirements. The document outlines use cases for RDF query languages and access protocols and their requirements, and examines design objectives. Comments are welcome. Visit the Semantic Web home page.
1. Best Practices Training on Evaluation of Accessible Web Sites, 6 July 2004, Paris
WAI-TIES will hold a full-day training on evaluation of Web site accessibility on 6 July in Paris, France. This hands-on training, in English, for experienced Web developers will provide an overview of the evaluation process, and detailed information on evaluating conformance to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. 2. Teleconference on Making Visualizations of Complex Information Accessible, 28 June 2004
The Research and Development Interest Group (RDIG) will hold a teleconference exploring accessibility issues in visualization of complex information, such as scientific measurements, financial data, modelling and simulation results, demographic information, and metrics describing the Web itself. Space is limited and pre-registration is required. Proceedings, including a summary of research questions, from a previous RDIG teleconference on making collaboration technologies accessible to people with disabilities are available.

The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group released a new public Working Draft of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (WCAG 2.0) on 11 March 2004 and welcomes comments. Feedback from the broadest possible audience contributes to the quality of the guidelines. Information on how to send comments is available in the "status" section of the document.

The Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines Working Group released a new public Working Draft of the Authoring Tool Accessibility Guidelines 2.0 (ATAG 2.0) on 24 February 2004 and welcomes comments. ATAG 2.0 addresses support for production of accessible content through all types of Web authoring tools including HTML editors, conversion tools (save-as-HTML tools), content management systems, and more.

The Protocols and Formats Working Group released a Working Draft on 5 November 2003 analyzing accessibility barriers presented by visual verification of bitmapped images that are increasingly used to limit access to services made available over the Web. This Working Draft examines a number of potential solutions. Comments welcome.

The Education and Outreach Working Group (EOWG) updated the WAI Resources Page, which is an annotated reference list of W3C/WAI documents including guidelines, techniques, checklists, evaluation resources, information on translations, and materials to help promote awareness and implementation of Web accessibility. New materials are periodically added to the list.
