W3C Names Ubiquitous Web and
Interaction Domain Leaders
2006-03-15:
W3C is pleased to announce new management of Activities related to the
Web's user interface. Philipp Hoschka
leads the newly created Ubiquitous Web Domain
which includes the Device Independence, Mobile Web Initiative (MWI),
Multimodal Interaction and Voice Browser Activities, and continues his
role as W3C Deputy Director for Europe. Chris
Lilley leads the Interaction Domain
which includes the Graphics, HTML, Math, Rich Web Clients, Style,
Synchronized Multimedia and XForms Activities. Read about W3C's

2006-03-10: Registration will open soon
for the Advisory Committee
Meeting on 21-22 May 2006 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Your suggestions
for agenda topics and structure would be appreciated by 24 March.
Call for Participation: Workshop on
Internationalizing SSML
2006-03-16: Following a successful
Workshop in Beijing, China, W3C holds a second Workshop on Internationalizing the Speech
Synthesis Markup Language (SSML) on 30-31 May, hosted by the
Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas (FORTH) in Heraklion,
Crete, site of the W3C Office in Greece. Attendees will identify and
prioritize extensions and additions to SSML to improve its use for rendering
non-English languages. Position papers are due 14 April. Read the about W3C

W3C Launches China Office
2006-04-04:
W3C is pleased to announce the opening of the W3C China Office. The
Office is hosted at the School of Computer Science
& Engineering of Beihang University in Beijing, China. Jinpeng
Huai is Office Manager. Kazuyuki Ashimura, Steve Bratt,
Marie-Claire Forgue, Ivan Herman, Richard Ishida, and Dean Jackson are
among those attending the opening ceremonies on 27-28 April. Read the

Web Accessibility Evaluation Tools Database
2006-03-21: The WAI Education and Outreach
Working Group and the Evaluation and Repair Tools Working Group have
published the Web
Accessibility Evaluation Tools database. Web accessibility
evaluation tools are software programs or online services that help
determine if a Web site meets accessibility guidelines. The
comprehensive database is searchable and sortable, and provides details
on over 100 evaluation tools. A companion document, Selecting Web
Accessibility Evaluation Tools, describes features of evaluation
tools and provides guidance on choosing specific tools.
WAI Resource: Why Standards Harmonization is Essential to Web
Accessibility
2006-03-17: The WAI Education and Outreach
Working Group has published Why Standards Harmonization is
Essential to Web Accessibility. This WAI resource explains the key
role that harmonization of standards plays in increasing the
accessibility of the Web for people with disabilities. It examines how
adoption of a consistent set of international technical standards can
drive more rapid progress on Web accessibility, and make the design and
development of accessible Web sites more efficient.
WAI Resource: Improving the Accessibility of Your Web Site
2006-03-16: The WAI Education and Outreach
Working Group has published the first version of Improving the Accessibility
of Your Web Site. This WAI resource provides guidance for fixing
accessibility barriers in existing Web sites; in other words, repairing
accessibility problems, or retrofitting a site to improve
accessibility. It includes approaches and tips for developing a
retrofitting plan to repair accessibility barriers on your site
efficiently and effectively. WAI welcomes comments at wai-eo-editors@w3.org (a publicly
archived list) on things that would make this resource more useful for
your organization.
