Biology was never a major user of Atlas but some simulation work was carried out. The combined Medical and Biological work on Atlas accounted for about 5% of the overall use of the machine.
However, the work on Crystallography and Databases both had an interest for biologists:
• The X-RAY System was used by both chemists and biologists. One of Jim Stewart's collaborators in the production of the system was Margaret Oakley Dayhoff. The program for locating peaks in Fourier maps was jointly written by Jim Stewart and Margaret Dayhoff.
• The FR80 was used to produce the printed form of three volumes of the Database of the Cambridge Crystallographic Data Centre.
• The Microdensitometer Service was used by a number of researchers working on the structure of proteins.
