The Atlas Netball Team's season used to revolve around the SRC Open Day. Once a year, the various SRC Establishments would meet to compete in a variety of sports and at the end of the day there would be a Social Event. The Atlas Laboratory was one of the smallest establishments but it tried to compete in as many sports as was possible.
A great deal of shouting made the netball final easy to find. The game's first appearance at Sports Day proved it a top choice. The final fought out between teams from RGO and Atlas was one of the most exciting of the day. Spectators lined the court yelling determinedly for one side or the other - or both - and the goals went 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2 with RGO just taking lead until Atlas broke through at 12-12 to go 13-12. With the ball whipping from end to end and the players changing direction and formation with lightning frequency. RGO held on, drew level and, in the very last seconds of the game scored one last goal to win by 14-13. Netball is definitely her stay!
The Atlas team improved on their 1970 performance by taking the Cup in 1971 and not dropping a game.
