In September 1958, the University of Nottingham organised a residential Applications of Computers Conference at Hugh Stewart Hall.
Dr Howlett of the Harwell Computing Group gave a talk on Autocoding.
On Dr Howlett's death, his wife, Joan, passed a number of Jack's papers to RAL for safe keeping. Most of the papers that were given out to delegates are included here together with a set of brochures that were handed out to Attendees.
Ten years earlier, at the University of Cambridge, the first Computer Conference in the UK took place, also attended by Dr Howlett. A second national conference was held in Manchester, 9th to 12th July 1951 and a third was held at NPL, Symposium on Automatic Digital Computation, 25th-28th March 1953. By 1958, the computer scene was well established and the Nottingham Conference was aimed at businesses who would benefit from the use and/or ownership of a computer.
The object of the course was to introduce Engineers and Executives to Digital Computers and their applications. The course ran from the morning of Monday, 15th September, 1958 until Friday evening.
