The results of the Seillac workshop are, as has been mentioned, a direct result of the collective work of the participants. However, it must be mentioned that the creation of an enthusiastic harmonious atmosphere was the result of many peoples' hard work. Most of the participants, prior to the Workshop, wrote down and sent in their thoughts on a methodology; these papers were distributed so that everyone was prepared to discuss ideas at the Workshop, rather than to try and absorb them. All of the invited speakers kindly volunteered their time and effort in setting up a background context; special mention should be given to Malcolm Sabin, who had the formidable task of digesting stacks of unstructured 'ambiguous' documentation on all kinds of computer graphics systems and nevertheless made a clear and a valuable presentation. Barbara Liskov gave an enlightening lecture on the importance of formal specification techniques and although it may be some time before the methodology is well enough understood to apply these techniques, it is important to remember them when the time comes for specifications. Bert Herzog chaired many of the more important sessions and as an all-round mediator directed many of the sub-group's arguments along more fruitful paths. Besides their contributions as participants, several people must be given thanks for a lot of work put in during the preparation and planning stages of the Workshop, in particular: Jose Encarnacao, Gulius Hermann, Bob Hopgood and Tom Sancha. J.C. Ballegeer and B. Gagey provided valuable technical assistance. Madame Caradec is also given thanks for her patient and helpful support throughout the Workshop and especially with the transcription and typing of the first draft of the documents. Thanks are also due to NEUCC, the Regional Computing Center at the Technical University of Denmark for supplying services and secretarial staff for the preparation and typing of the final manuscript. Bob Hopgood receives also thanks for his reading of the final copy of this document.

Financial support for the travel expenses of 3 participants was kindly offered by two IFIP-connected institutions: Institut de Recherches en Informatique et Automatique (IRIA), France, and Gesellschaft fur Mathematik und Datenverarbeitung (GMD), Germany. The institutions are gratefully thanked for their contributions.

As a final note, we would like to put in a word of appreciation for the atmosphere of friendship which prevailed during the preparation for the Workshop, during the stay at Seillac, and in the periods of work following the Workshop.
