Manchester University, in the form of Jodrell Bank, mounted an experiment on Ariel III with several objectives:
Previously, a number of rocket and satellite observations had been made of intense radio noise in the topside ionosphere.
Data received from Ariel III showed that some of the noise bands occur only when the satellite is within the range of invariant latitude which corresponds to the auroral zones. The results from Ariel III showed that the noise bands were probably generated by Cerenkov radiation from auroral electrons with energies of a few keV.
