A major addition to the Chilton computing came with the announcement that the Rutherford Laboratory had ordered an IBM 360/195 for delivery in 1971 with 20% being given to the Atlas Computer Laboratory to make available to university users.
Discussions continued with CDC concerning a possible installation of their new supercomputer, the STAR-100, that would replace the CDC 7600.
The Ministry of Technology, although acknowledging that they had let London University purchase CDC equipment, indicated that they would look very hard at a proposal to put a big American machine at the Atlas Laboratory. They would want to know what work would be done on it and why an American machine was necessary.
