Edinburgh Upgrades Again

Edinburgh repaces their IBM 370/155 by an IBM 370/158 and adds a second System 4/75.

Rationalisation of Computing Resources within SRC

With three separate computing organisations at Daresbury, Rutherford and Atlas and a funding crisis within SRC, 1974 was the year when the focus was on organisation of computing within SRC rather than computing needs. Various political discussions took place which included the Atlas Computer Laboratory moving to Daresbury, Daresbury computing being done at the Atlas Computer Laboratory, and the Atlas and Rutherford computing departments merging.

The possibility of a National Computing Laboratory was also considered with the Atlas Laboratory facilities merging with facilities owned by Department of Trade and Industry.
