In August 1973, the University of Manchester Regional Computer Centre building was completed and the staff moved in. In December, the 7600/1906A was moved from West Gorton where the necessary interfacing hardware and software was developed. This massively increased the power available to the academic computing scene by about 12 Atlas power.
ICL offered to deliver a P4, the first of their new range machines, to the Atlas Laboratory in 1994. the main argument was that it would provide valuable assistance to ICL in developing the software for the New Range thus giving it an opportunity to sell into the UK academic market.
At the same time, CDC were having problems with the STAR-100. The complete state of the machine was not being saved when a paging interrupt occurred in the middle of a vector operation and this would mean a delay while it got sorted out.
Meanwhile, discussions were taking place concerning the structure for the computer organisation overall on the Chilton site.
