SPROGS Note No 17: Notes on PDP15 Local Users Group Meeting held in London on 20 February 1973

W D Shaw

22 February 1973

Hand-outs

"Technical Guide to the Unichannel 15"

"Uni.channel 15"

"Here's What we said at DECUS"

"An Introduction to Hasp 15"

"RSX PLUS ONLINE SYSTEMS Configuration"

Speakers

Ed Wargo PDP15 Product Line, Maynard

Gary Kohl RSX PLUS (also from Maynard)

Most of the three hour session was a sales talk for Unichannel 15, the new ME15 memory modules and RSX Plus software.

Details of Unichannel are in the various handouts. Basically, it costs £9,770 with 4K of PDP11 store, or £10,600 with 8K (which allows I/O spooling on the RK05 disc). Each additional disc drive costs £2,630. Currently, two plotters, several types of lineprinter, the RK05 disc pack, and the card reader are supported with PDP155-to-Unichannel handlers. No plotter software is available yet, but will be at a later date.

RSX Plus was discussed by Gary Kohl. A version for use with the RP02 disc will be available in March. A new version, RSX PHASE 3, will be released in May. This will be a cost-of-tape release for those with RSX Plus already. The major addition is ONLINE SYSTEMS CONFIGURATION, a facility allowing changing of RSX core partition sizes without regenerating the system. It appears that RSX Plus will have DOS disc format, allowing change-over from DOS to RSX (or vice versa) in 1.5 seconds. Apparently, RSX is issued in a DOSSAV format - RSX runs under DOS in some sense. The only major change to RSX graphics is that the spark-pen and light-pen now track from the handler, as they should have done in the first place. There are a few additional subroutines added to VTPRIM. DOS graphics on the FORTRAN-VTPRIM level will run under RSX with no change.

It is possible to hang a DECWRITER off an LT19 serial interface or the system console interface. A board is required to make it run at 300 baud.
