About the RARM

Aims (at outset)

The research area review meeting was arranged by the SERC at the request of the Engineering Board's Computing and Communications Subcommittee. The objectives of the meeting were:

  1. to inform the academic/industrial/government community of SERC's plans for the Programme;
  2. to discuss those plans and define the Programme in more detail;
  3. to identify/define individual projects; and
  4. to form an IKBS Programme community, identifying potential Programme participants and forming consortia for individual projects.

Organisation

The RARM was set up by a small organising committee chaired by Dr John Taylor (Ministry of Defence and Chairman of the C&C Subcommittee) and consisting of Dr Karen Sparck-Jones (Cambridge Computer Laboratory), Mr John Monniot (SERC - formerly Joint-Secretary of the C&C Subcommittee) and Mr Mike Hotchkiss (SERC - presently Secretary of the C&C Subcommittee). Mrs Hamshaw (SERC - C&C Subcommittee Secretariat) carried out the administrative arrangements before and during the RARM and Miss Bujas (SERC) provided typing services at the RARM.
