The major acknowledgment must be to the cumulative effort of the participants to Seillac II who contributed time and energy in preparing position papers, debating for many hours and producing summaries of their main conclusions. Position papers were also received from Doug Engelbart, Ernie Warman and Robin Williams.
The Organising Committee was largely responsible for the work prior to the Workshop. Special thanks must be given both to the individuals who gave their time and their institutions who provided the finance for a number of meetings. In particular, we would like to thank:
The success of the Workshop was aided by the technical and secretarial assistance available at the Workshop which was donated by various institutes:
The secretaries worked long hours, always remained cheerful and managed to capture a complete transcript of the Workshop on computer tape during the week. The technical assistants kept all the equipment functioning, recorded all the sessions and coped with a number of minor and major catastrophes. Special thanks must be paid to our scribe Dave Duce whose untiring pen recorded all of the many discussions and often worked late into the night transcribing notes into a legible form ready for typing. Thanks must also be given to Paul ten Hagen and Dave Rosenthal who gave assistance when the backlog was at its greatest height.
We acknowledge with gratitude the generosity of Hewlett-Packard, France for the loan of two HP2648A interactive text-editing terminals with tape stations and printers, as well as complete technical backup assistance. These terminals, which functioned throughout the Workshop, made it possible for the secretariat to have machine readable copy of all of the discussions by the end of the meeting. As well, printouts of sessions were available for the participants to check and peruse. The employment of these terminals was invaluable to the organisation of the Workshop and to the Editors afterwards, saving them countless hours of labour.
Financial support for the travel expenses of two Workshop participants was kindly offered by the Ministere des Affaires Etrangeres, Division des Relations Internationales, France and by the Institut de Recherches en Informabique et Automatique, IRIA, France. We gratefully acknowledge their backing as well as the support offered by the Gesellshaft fur Hathematik und Datenverarbeitung, GMD, Bonn, F.R Germany.
Finally the success of the Workshop is also due to the spirit of cooperation and understanding which is to be found within IFIP.
