Robbie Roberts, Atlas's Head of Administration, kept a detailed record of the initial construction phases of the Atlas Laboratory. A site was chosen between the two major local users, the Atomic Energy Research Establishment at Harwell and the Rutherford High Energy Laboratory at Chilton.
The period 1962 to 1964 saw the construction of the original computer building and office block.
The period 1966-67 saw the first major extension with a second office block added.
The third major building programme was the construction of a second computer block to house the ICL 1906A. This took place in the period 1970-1971 and at the same time the quadrangle was completed with a third office block and the construction of a Lecture Theatre.
The site continued to expand after the Atlas Computer Laboratory was merged with the Rutherford Laboratory. In the final phase another office block was added mainly to house the Joint Network Team.
