SPROGS Technical Paper No 3: Procedure for cleaning the Magnetic Tape decks of the PDP15

G A England

19 July 1972

1. Open the transparent door of the unit, and wipe the exposed surfaces of the transport with a cloth to remove dust.

2. Remove the head and capstan covers. They are metal castings painted white, and held in place by spring clips.

3. Disengage the retaining springs which hold the glass vacuum chamber covers in position. Remove both the springs and covers.

4. Clean the chamber covers with a cloth and solvent.

5. Clean the roller and the fixed guide in each vacuum chamber with a cloth.

6. Wipe the inner surfaces of the vacuum chambers with a clean, dry cloth. Clean the vertical surfaces with a cloth and solvent.

CAUTION: Do not get solvent on the top or bottom walls of the vacuum chambers, as this will damage their coating.

7. Clean the pinch rollers, the tape capstans, the split ring tape guides, the tape cleaner, the tape head and the mu-metal block with a felt tipped applicator dipped in the solvent. The screw heads of the tape guides must be screwed in finger tight, or the tape may be wrongly positioned as it passes over the tape head. The pin should fit inside the collar on top of the mu-metal block - or parity errors will appear on the tape.

8. Put back the covers on the vacuum chambers and clip them in. Ensure they fit tightly, or the tape may be torn.

9. If the transparent door is dirty, wash it with soapy water. Do not use a dry cloth, as that would charge it with static; do not use solvent as that would dissolve the door.

CAUTION: The solvent is a poison - wash your hands after cleaning the decks.
