Dumping of LOGFILE

R Brandwood

25 November 1975

The logging system, SYSLOG, maintains its data in a file called LOG;LOGFIL LOGFIL. This file must be preserved to allow accounting details to be analysed. It is. therefore, nccessary to dump this file to tape.

1. DUMP TAPES

There are four tapes reserved for dumping the log. They are labelled WEEK 1 - 7-track LOGDUMP and WEEK 1 - 9-track LOGDUMP and another two for WEEK 2. These tapes are located by the FR80 and each week the 7-track tape will be processed on the 1906A.

2. WHEN TO DUMP THE LOG

The log is to be dumped onto 7- and 9-track at the following times:

(1) When file is nearly full - this is indicated by SYSLOG.

(2) When machine is to be used by:

   (a) Engineer
   (b) Programmers

(3) At the end of each week.

(4) Before leaving the machine unattended for a whole shift.

3. HOW TO DUMP THE LOG

At the beginning of each week it is necessary to dump the first log at the start of the tape, the remaining logs are to be appended one after the other.

To dump the log, load the current dump tape and then type (-> indicates operator action):

->S$J
DATE
->enter the date and time plus comment if needed
OK
->E (moves tape past previous dumps - THIS IS NOT REQUIRED FOR
     FIRST DUMP OF THE WEEK)
OK
->FLOG;LOGFIL LOGFIL
then check that the dump was successful by typing:
->T

Repeat the process again for the 7/9-track copy. It is essential that the sequence is restarted from S$J and the correct tape channel is selected. Any change of channel will lead to errors. If the dump is successful, clean out the log file by running LOG;MAKE as shown in FR80 Operator Notice 13, paragraph 2.1.

4. TAPE FAILS AND OTHER FAULTS

If the tape fails or is overwritten (the tape not positioned properly because the 'E' uas omitted), the second tape should be written correctly, then copied to the other tape in the following way:

load tape to be read from on unit 1 (remove. write permit ring)
load tape to be WRITTEN to on unit 3
load copy program
->COPY $J
->III/

This will then copy the tape from unit 1 to the tape on unit 3.
