In 1959, after receiving his PhD, entitled Some statistical problems of a long-term field research, from the London School of Economics, John R Ashford joined the University of Exeter. He became a Professor in 1968. His inaugural lecture was entitled Statistical method in the biological sciences.
His major use of the Chilton Atlas was in analysing surveys related to national health. Early work was related to respiratory problems of miners. Between 1967 and 1970, two large surveys were analysed using the Chilton Atlas concerned with:

John Ashford retired and became Emeritus Professor in Statistics at Exeter University. He died in 2010.
J M Cobby moved to the Grassland Research Institute, Maidenhead in 1976 and later to Reading University. A paper Statisticians in Clover (and other Forage Crops) was published in 1976.
R J Pethybridge moved to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
