Richard Peto and Malcolm Pike, Oxford University

Ricard Peto and Malcolm Pike were members of the Group run by Richard Doll (Regius Professor of Medicine) at Oxford University. Richard Doll directed the Medical Research Council's Statistical Research Unit from 1961 through 1969 before moving to Oxford. In Oxford he also served as the Director of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's Cancer Epidemiology and Clinical Trials Unit. Many other leading epidemiologists also worked and trained with the Group in Oxford.

Several large scale medical surveys were input to Atlas and stored on Ampex magnetic tape at ACL. For example, by 1968 details for 12,000 women and their choice of birth control were available. The tapes were updated monthly and analysed using the Sigma2 front-end connected to a terminal in Oxford. A separate study involving 10,000 people with chronic bronchitis was also uploaded and analysed on the Chilton Atlas. The second survey led Malcolm Pike to develop a cine film using the SC 4020 microfilm recorder, showing the progress of the first recognised human cancer virus across West Africa.
