Gareth Gwyn Roberts (Reader) and J I Palenco of the New University of Ulster were users of the Chilton Atlas in the period 1969-1970 simulating current-voltage characteristics of thermally assisted tunnelling (TAT). Physical situations where TAT could be important included conduction through band tail states in amorphous semiconductors and minority carrier injection into phosphors.
Two papers were produced:
Thermally assisted tunnelling in dielectric films, G G Roberts and J I Polanco, 1970
Thermally assisted tunnelling in dielectric films (II), J I Polanco and G G Roberts, 1972
Later, J I Polanco left Ulster to join Standard Electrica in Madrid.
Gareth Gwyn Roberts became Professor of the Department then moved to the University of Durham in 1976 as Professor of Applied Physics; he became a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1984; in 1985 he left Durham to join industry, and became director of research at Thorn-EMI while continuing research as visiting professor of electronic engineering at Oxford.
He later held a range of posts involved with university administration. In 1997 he was knighted for his services to higher education.
Sir Gareth Gwyn Roberts was born on May 16 1940; and died on February 6 2007.
