Arthur Hughes was an experimenter on the British satellites Ariel III and IV making synoptic measurements in the magnetosphere of naturally occurring VLF waves and of ground based VLF transmitters.
He worked as a researcher in Space Physics at the University of Sheffield and at launch sites in California and South Australia. Dr Hughes worked for short periods at the Atlas Computer Laboratory, The Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Aldermaston; British Aerospace, Bristol and the Weapons Research Establishment, South Australia.
He was a significant user of Atlas from 1968 to 1972 processing Ariel III data for the Sheffield University VLF experiment using Hartran.
M Ashworth, also from Sheffield University, worked closely with Arthur Hughes on Ariel III and Ariel IV Data Reduction.
They used the SC4020 to produce their results in an easily-used visual form.
