John Reid was a member of the Diffuse Scattering Group of Dr John Smith at the University of Aberdeen
and used the Chilton Atlas from 1967 until 1972.
He developed particular aspects of the
theory of anharmonic scattering with Dr John Pirie, another member of the Diffuse Scattering Group.
Later computationally intensive work investigated the effect on X-ray scattering of
dynamically deforming atoms.
John Reid is currently (2017) an Honorary Senior Lecturer in Physics at Aberdeen University
and the Curator of the University's nationally recognised scientific instrument collection.
He has written an excellent article:
The Atlas computer in the 1960s and early 1970s: a personal reminiscence
giving a user view of using Atlas from a remote university (https://homepages.abdn.ac.uk/npmuseum/article/Atlas.pdf).
